History of Atlanta, Georgia
The history of Atlanta dates back to 1837, when the city was founded at the end of the Western and Atlantic railway line. Following the end of the American Civil War several decades later, several Black colleges were founded in the city, and a prosperous Black middle class emerged. Later on, Atlanta became a major center for the Civil Rights Movement and was the birthplace and home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, Atlanta is considered to be one of the most sprawling metropolitan areas in the U.S., leading to a high degree of racial and economic polarization across the region.
