Dan Schulman is the former President and CEO of PayPal. His goal is to transform financial services and e-commerce to improve the economic well-being of people across the world. By leveraging his expertise in payments and mobile technology, Schulman is leading PayPal’s push to transform the way people move and manage money, as well as how merchants and consumers interact and transact.
Under Schulman’s leadership, PayPal was named one of the top companies on JUST Capital and Forbes’ JUST 100 list, featuring “companies doing right by America.” Additionally, PayPal has been recognized as a Fortune Change the World company because of its work to tackle the biggest challenges facing society today.
Schulman’s leadership and impact have been acknowledged by several notable organizations. In 2022, he received the Committee for Economic Development (CED) Distinguished Leadership Award for his commitment to corporate citizenship. That same year, One Hundred Black Men of New York honored Schulman with the Excellence in Economic Empowerment Award.
In 2021, the New York Urban League presented him with the Frederick Douglass Award, which recognized his commitment to advancing the rights of generations of underserved Black Americans. Additionally, in 2021, he was awarded Luxembourg’s Order of the Oak Crown honor, presented by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, and ranked third on Fortune’s list of the World’s Greatest Leaders. Schulman also received the Voices of Solidarity Award, which is presented by Vital Voices, for advocating on behalf of women and girls around the world.
Aside from his most recent awards, Schulman has frequently been recognized by Fortune as one of the top 20 Businesspersons of the Year. He has also been named one of the top 100 Most Creative People by Fast Company, and, in 2019, he was honored as one of Glassdoor’s Top 50 CEOs.
Before joining PayPal, Schulman served as Group President at American Express. Prior to that, he was President of the Prepaid Group at Sprint Nextel Corporation following its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA, Inc. Earlier in his career, Schulman was President and CEO of Priceline Group, Inc., where he led the company through a period of rapid growth and expansion. He also held a series of positions, including President of the Consumer Markets Division, at AT&T.
When it comes to board memberships, Schulman is actively involved with several organizations. For one, he is a member of the International Business Council for the World Economic Forum. He also serves on the Board of Governors and Board of Stewards for the Future of Financial & Monetary Systems platform. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Business Roundtable, a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and an International Advisory Council member of the Singapore Economic Development Board, among other organizations.
Schulman received a BA from Middlebury College and an MBA from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, as well as an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Rutgers University and Middlebury College.
